Introduction to MFT

Evolution of MFT: In initial days companies have used the Sneaker Net approach (File moved by floppy disk, CD’s, USB etc) to move large files across the companies. In this approach there is no security for the files that are getting transferred.

Sneakernet is a jargon term for the method of transmitting electronic information by personally carrying it from one place to another on floppy disk or other removable medium. The idea is that someone is using their shoes (possibly sneakers) to move data around rather than using the telecommunications network

In the next generation files are transferred through FTP, with FTP we can move files from one single system to another single system. Some used emails for moving simple and small size files. In both these cases (FTP and Email) file transfer is still unsecured and doesn’t have method to encrypting the data. The security risk in FTP gave rise to SFTP and FTPS, two different methods of encrypting the data. By using Secure FTP business can send large file but still only point to point. This is where MFT comes.

Managed File Transfer: MFT software is marketed to corporate enterprises as an alternative to using ad-hoc file transfer solutions, such as FTP,HTTP and others. MFT offers a higher level of security and control than FTP. Features include reporting (e.g., notification of successful file transfers), non-repudiation, auditability, global visibility, automation of file transfer-related activities and processes, end-to-end security, and performance metrics/monitoring.

Oracle Managed File Transfer: Oracle MFT is a high performance, standards-based, end-to-end managed file gateway. It features design, deployment, and monitoring of file transfers using a lightweight web-based design-time console that includes file encryption, scheduling, and embedded FTP and sFTP servers.

Oracle Managed File Transfer lets you perform Scheduling, Compression, decompression, Encryption, decryption, Archiving, renaming, deletion and Securing file transfer with OWSM policies.Oracle Managed File Transfer lets you transfer files to and from many endpoint types:
  •               File and FTP based endpoints
  •              SOAP web-services based endpoints
  •             B2B based endpoints
  •                Cloud endpoints
